Isaac William Smith was a member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1846. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1877, he was appointed an associate justice in the New Hampshire Supreme Judicial Court. He was named a trustee of Dartmouth College in 1885 and held that post until his death. The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court.
